Zion/Bryce Canyon/Escalante
October, 1998

Tim Wood and myself had been talking about going hiking in Southern Utah for some time.  Ultimately, Tim got our act together by organizing a trip for October and we set off.  We had originally expected a group of four, but pregnancy and an injury cut the crew down to the two of us.  The experience varied from stunning (all of Bryce Canyon) to extreme (sleeping in a snowstorm--a first for either of us) to surreal (Pizza in small town Utah on high school dance night).  In the end it was perhaps the most visually stunning trip I've taken, with the only real negatives being the weather, and as a direct result our inability to explore any substantial slot canyons.   There's always next time.

At present, I'm long on images, and short on text, then again, that's probably what you'd prefer, so go get 'em.

We arrived at night, and pitched our tent.  The rains came
up that night, and we awoke to find half of the tent was
in a pool of water.  Great start, eh?

Our first day in Zion. Rainy. But that brought out all the water falls.

If you look carefully, you can see me

us a short reprive so we took it

Since it was raining, we did some short hikes
in Zion Valley.  These formations were on
our way up to Hidden Canyon.
